Ousia is an open tableware set that is ambiguous in its purpose and design. It is intended to be overarching in its use and is detached from serving rules and the habitual way of arranging certain dishes. Through its simple geometry and modularity, Ousia oscillates between its sculptural character and an open functionality. The ambiguity of function and meaning leaves the product‘s application and display open to interpretation. The possibilities of the object‘s being only emerge through interaction with it, revealing its essence, the ousia. The possibilities of the object‘s being only emerge through interaction with it, revealing its essence, the ousia. Ousia was the result of an exploration and critical reflection on the design language of Lella and Massimo Vignelli. The concept of ambiguity and the question of what advantages and disadvantages ambiguity can have in design were the determining factors.
